That's so weird!

"That's so weird!" - damit kann man meine ersten Erfahrungen in Canberra und als Au Pair womöglich am besten beschreiben. Besonders zutreffend ist diese Aussage besonders dann, wenn es ums Autofahren in Australien geht, denn ich hatte am Montag zum ersten Mal das Vergnügen, auf der linken Straßenseite zu fahren. Dabei war es nicht nur seltsam, plötzlich auf der anderen Straßenseite zu fahren, sondern auch im Auto Blinker und Scheibenwischer vertauscht zu haben, den Steuerknüppel plötzlich mit der linken Hand zu bedienen und beim Abbiegen darauf zu achten, nicht auf die falsche Straßenseite zu fahren, sondern auch zur Abwechslung mit einem Automatik zu fahren. Ich hab meine Kupplung ja so ziemlich vermisst - dafür brauche ich irgendwann unbedingt mal so eine coole Einparkhilfe mit Videoaufnahme hinten am Auto. Damit kann man quasi gar nicht falsch einparken.

"That's so weird" trifft aber auch auf Canberra im Allgemeinen zu. Die Stadt mag nicht sonderlich durch Wolkenkratzer, altertümliche Geschichte oder ausgefallene Architektur überzeugen, dafür befindet man sich aber binnen von Minuten im Grünen. Die Fotos unten wurden hauptsächlich auf dem Weg zwischen meinem Stadtteil Fisher und dem Stadtzentrum aufgenommen, auf welchem man mit etwas Glück nicht nur grünen Papageien, sondern auch Kangurus begegnen kann. Hinzu kommt, dass die Stadt durch ihre architektonische Planung absolut symetrisch aufgebaut ist. Seltsam und gleichzeitig bewundernswert sind neben dem Artenreichtum im Tierreich also auch runde Straßenzüge, die künstlich angelegten Seen sowie faszinierende Aussichten von den umgebenden Bergen. Sonntag Abend hat mich Alex auf den Mt. Ainslee gefahren und ich bereue wirklich, dass ich meine Kamera an dem Abend nicht einstecken hatte. Man kan von dort aus wirklich die gesamte Stadt überblicken und bei Nacht bietet sich einem ein unglaubliches Lichterschauspiel! Sehr empfehlenswert!

Bis auf die Fahrstunde auf der linken Seite der Straße ist diese Woche bisher nicht viel Spannendes passiert. Am Montag habe ich mich am Abend mit einem anderen Au Pair aus Frankreich getroffen, um Guardians of the Galaxy anzuschauen. Den Film und auch das Ben & Jerry's Eis, das ich mir davor genüsslich auf der Zunge zergehen lassen habe, kann ich wirklich nur empfehlen. An dem Abend haben sich dann leider auch erste Krankheitszeichen gezeigt - Halsschmerzen und Kopfweh. Nicht gut, dachte ich mir und am Dienstag hat sich dieser Gedanke dank Rotznase, noch mehr Hals- und Kopfschmerzen und leichtem Schüttelfrost auch nur noch bestätigt. Zumindest waren die Kinder an dem Tag recht ruhig. Zur Abwechslung war es mal Despina, die mehr Aufmerksamkeit forderte, da ihr gerade die Backenzähne wachsen. Ich hoffe einfach mal, dass die Erkältung nach einem Tag Ruhe morgen wieder von dannen zieht - gebrauchen kann ich die nämlich gerade so gar nicht.

Zur Krönung der Erkältung war natürlich auch Silas, eines der beiden Nachbarskinder, heute krank und dementsprechend ziemlich schlecht gelaunt. Zumindest konnte ich seine volle Windel nicht riechen und musste lediglich mit dem Anblick dealen.

So und mit dieser schönen Kopfkinoszene werd ich mich jetzt wohl erstmal wieder verabschieden und mich vorraussichtlich am Wochenende wieder bei euch melden :)

"That's so weird!" - that's probably the best way to describe my my first experiences in Canberra as well as my new job as an au pair. What was particularly weird this week was my first driving lesson in Australia. Alex had me drive around the suburb and experience what it feels like to drive on the left side of the road, to have the gear stick on your left side and to have the wipers and indicators exactly the other way round than in Europe and boy, it is such a weird feeling. But it was not only that but also the fact that I had never driven an automatic car before and not having to clutch is just weird but also kind of amazing. Also, I really need one of those parking assist system with a camera for reverse driving - so useful!

"That's so weird!" also describes Canberra in general pretty well. The city might not have the big skyscrapers, ancient history sites or super fancy architecture. Canberra is great anyway especially because of the beautiful green spaces and nature reserves which are only a five-minute walk from the urban areas. Most of the pictures below were taken during my bike ride into the city on Monday. In Germany, you only get a view like this outside of the city but in Canberra nature is everywhere and it's awesome! If you're lucky you might even get to see parrots or kangaroos right next to the bike paths! In addition, the city is not only fascinating because of the countless animal encounters but also because of it's symmetry. Unlike most cities in Europe, Canberra was planned and built from scratch - so you get to see many streets which are arranged in circles, artificial lakes as well as beautiful hills. Alex took me on top of Mt Ainslie last Sunday night and the view was just breathtaking. I really regret not taking the camera with me as the city lights just looked absolutely marvelous. I guess that just means that I have to go there again.

Apart from my driving lesson there hasn't been anything spectacular happening this week so far. I went to see Guardians of the Galaxy with another au pair from France Monday night. I can absolutely recommend the movie as well as the Ben & Jerry's ice cream we had before the movie started. Unfortunately I wasn't feeling too well that night and the next day proofed that I caught the kids' cold - bad headaches, a running nose as well as a sore throat were included in the package. At least the kids were pretty calm that day and for a change Despina was the one who was a little bit grumpy as she has been teething. I really hope that my day off tomorrow will help me get rid of the cold. I really don't want to stay in bed all day now that I have so many things to explore.

To crown it all, Silas, one of the neighbours' kids I was looking after today, was sick too and consequently not in a very good mood today. Fortunately, my nose was so blocked that I didn't have to smell his full nappy and only had to deal with the sight of it.
